Miami's now defunct Blockbuster Bowl was the setting for the Noles solitary win over Penn State in only three games (the others: a 17-17 tie in the '67 Gator Bowl and three point loss in the 2005 Orange Bowl). FSU was coming off a 9-2 regular season in 1990 and played like they had something to prove, out-muscling PSU 24-17. Game photos from the collection of Chris Holder Photography.
Terrell Buckley zooms by JoPa on one of his two long punt returns.
Amp Lee breaks loose for a big chunk of his 86 total yards during the win.
Lawrence Dawsey had one of the biggest games in his FSU career with 107 yards
on eight receptions.
Bobby hoists the hardware after a first and only victory against his old friend.
Somehow my lasting memory of the game other than the fact FSU was loaded with stellar athletes, is Paterno snarling about Renegade, the Seminole mascot, even bitching afterwards to the press, all the while belittling himself and Penn State with his rancor and surprising pettiness. Others may claim that Paterno and Bowden were pals, but I never quite bit into that.
